SELLING: If you have never sold anything by auction before, don’t worry. The auctioneers will give you free advice and sale estimates before you make up your mind. This can either be at one of our regular Valuation Afternoons for smaller items or, for large items including full house clearances, Maxwells will arrange a home visit, again free of charge.
All lots in the Antiques section and in the Collectors’ Sales are photographed and are available online with full descriptions for a week before each sale.
Transport and disposal of unsaleable goods can also be arranged if required.
Valuations for auction: Every Thursday 12 noon – 4pm at The Saleroom – no appointment is necessary.
Buying at auction can be a cheap, interesting and fun way of furnishing a house or collecting. Catalogues are available for all sales, both on the internet at this site or www.the-saleroom.com with images or by post. Our staff will be happy to advise on prices and bidding. Come along to one of our sales to see what happens, or follow the sale online at
Auctions are normally held on 3rd Wednesday monthly to include china, glassware, silver, jewellery, pictures and furniture. Additional quarterly Collectors’ Items sales include toys, model railway, medals and militaria, coins, stamps, books, Beswick, Doulton etc.
We endeavour to send items purchased by post, usually Royal Mail Special Delivery, but will not send items which are fragile or very heavy. We recommend Mailbox in Macclesfield. Please check with us before bidding if in doubt.
There is a cafe on view and sale days serving drinks, homemade cakes, scones, soup and hot & cold refreshments.
We provide a written valuation with photographs. Whether this is for a single item, multiple items of full house contents will be dependant upon your insurer’s requirements. Under insurance can be a major problem if you ever have to make a claim. Make sure your most valued possessions are professionally assessed and that your overall cover is kept up to date.
If you are dealing with the contents of a property following a death, your solicitor will advise whether a valuation of the house contents is required. Inheritance Tax will depend upon the size and nature of the estate. Maxwell’s will arrange to visit and provide a written valuation in accordance with Inland Revenue regulations, by a professionally qualified valuer.
Valuations are carried out under the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors guidelines.
